Entertainment for the Christmas Holidays

Christmas is past – but with a beautifully decorated tree standing in the living room, the smell of cinnamon all over the house and a stomach full of Christmas cookies, the Chrismas mood is still lingering. Most importantly, even though Christmas Day is over, the holidays will last until Epiphany. So in order to preserve the spirit of Christmas for a few more days and to keep you from getting bored to death, what with university being closed, I collected a few Christmas links – all in English, of course.

Christmas Short Stories

  • Auggie Wren’s Christmas Story by Paul Auster – a story in a story which gives a lot to think about.
  • The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry – a heartwarming tale about a young married couple conveying the message that love is more important than material things.
  • Xmas Comes But Once… by Frank Hardy – a hilarious story set in Australia about Santa Clause, a young, poor philosopher, his fiancée and an alcoholic elephant. I can really recommend it but unfortunately couldn’t find online. However, it is available in Hardy’s collection of short stories “The loser now will be later to win.”

Christmas Movies

  • Home Alone – I’ve never seen it myself, but I’ve been told that it is a must see for younger and older children during Christmas time. It’s about 8-year old Kevin who is left alone at home by his family by mistake on Christmas. Apparently a pure, childish fun for the whole family!
  • Love Actually – The film follows eight touching love stories around Christmas which turn out to be somehow intertwined. With Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley and many more.
  • The Holiday – A romantic comedy starring great actors like Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jack Black and Jude Law. Two women change houses and lives during the Christmas holidays and find true love ❤
